Huawei launches the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro with a Snapdragon 888 and Kirin 9000

Finally, after months of waiting for the Huawei P50 series has been revealed. Huawei has now unveiled its newest flagship phones, the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro. There’s no Pro+ model this time around, just vanilla and a Pro phone. The two phones are 4G-only, but both feature improved cameras and some interesting choices for chipsets, more on that in a second.

The Huawei P50 Pro was starting on pre-order on July 30 and the first units will ship in August. The 256 GB and 512 GB models come with a choice of Snapdragon 888 or Kirin 9000 chips, they cost CNY 6,500 and CNY 7,500, respectively. The cheapest model has a Snapdragon 888 chipset and 8/128 GB memory, that one is CNY 6,000 ($930/€780).

The Huawei P50 will also arrive in September, starting at CNY 4,500 ($700/€590) for the 8/128 GB model, the 8/256 GB one will go for CNY 5,000.

The Huawei P50 Pro has a 6.6-inch FHD+ 120 Hz OLED. Under the hood is the option of a Snapdragon 888 or a Kirin 9000. Interestingly, both versions only support 4G connectivity, even if both chipsets are clearly capable of 5G. The base model has 8 GB of RAM and 128/256/512GB storage (plus an NM card slot for up to 256 GB more). The top-specced model has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The Huawei P50 sports a less impressive 6.5-inch FHD+ 90 Hz display. The vanilla P50 will only come with a Snapdragon 888 chipset, no Kirin option here. This model has 8GB of RAM and 128/256 GB storage, plus the microSD slot and it is limited to 4G again.

Huawei P50 and P50 Pro

Let’s start with the cameras-Huawei’s P series has earned a reputation for delivering some of the best cameras on the market, and the P50 Pro is no different. At its rear is a stellar quad-cam system: a 50 MP main camera, a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 64 MP 3.5x optical zoom lens. Huawei has finally returned to the 40 MP monochrome camera. Huawei P50 and P50 Pro models have single 13MP selfie cameras.

Huawei P50 retains the 50 MP main camera and 13 MP ultra-wide shooter from the P50 Pro but exchanges the 64 MP telephoto lens for a 12 MP one, albeit with 5x optical zoom capabilities. Gone is the 40 MP monochrome shooter, but the 13 MP selfie camera makes a cameo as well.

The Huawei P50 and P50 Pro have similarly-sized batteries too – 4,360mAh for the Pro and 4,100mAh for the vanilla. Both are equal when it comes to charging, supporting 66W over USB-C and 50W wirelessly.
